I’m so exciiiiiitted!! It can’t come fast enough!!!
Melinda’s favorite thing that Phil ever gave her?
Oops, are my OTP feels showing? ;) Hahaha! But since I have a feeling that’s not exactly what you meant, here’s a headcanon.
Melinda’s favorite thing from Phil is a simple, but beautiful, wooden picture frame that Phil had given her right before their mission to Bahrain. It wasn’t the picture frame she loved so much, but the collage of pictures inside it that was most precious to her. They were four pictures of just her and Phil.
The top left was a picture of them at the Academy. It was their first year there and they were already excellent friends. John Garrett had captured a picture of the end result of Melinda’s prank on Phil. She sneaked some hair dye in his shampoo and his dirty blonde hair had been turned purple as a result. The picture showed Phil with his hands on his hips, glaring fiercely at Garrett (although it looked like he was looking straight at the camera) with his bright purple hair standing out against the background. Next to him was May, doubled over and clutching her stomach in laughter, her smile as bright as sunshine, eyes glowing with mirth.
The next picture had been taken on one of their undercover ops. They were posing as a couple at a mall and had gotten into one of the photo booths. A great place for spying, but also for taking silly pictures while they waited. Phil had saved all their many pictures and decided to add one of them to this collage. He chose one where she had leaned over to kiss him on the cheek, eyes closed with a soft smile on her face. Phil was looking at the camera with his eyes wide and his hand over his mouth, as if in shock. Melinda had grinned and rolled her eyes when she saw it.
The bottom left picture had also been taken on a op, but they hadn’t known they were being photographed at the time. It showed Phil and Melinda back-to-back with their guns up and ready to shoot at a moments notice. After they had completed their mission, they scanned the area and found the secret photographer hiding in some bushes. It was just some aspiring journalist trying to get a new exciting story to share with the public, but Phil confiscated his film anyway. He’d planned on destroying it, but when he saw this picture, he couldn’t bear to. It was a great depiction of what a phenomenal team they made together.
The final picture was of Melinda and Phil dancing at a SHIELD gala only a few weeks before Bahrain. Melinda was wearing a silky purple dress that made her even more stunning than usual, and Phil was looking very dapper and handsome in his tux. The picture was zoomed in so it only got their torsos and up. They were dancing so close you couldn’t wedge a pencil between them. They both had huge smiles on their face as they gazed at each other, lost in their own little world. Melinda looked at Phil with so much love and joy, you could practically feel it radiating off the photo. Phil was watching Melinda with wonder and an indescribable tenderness as he held her close in his arms.
Melinda had kept this treasured picture frame on her dresser in her apartment where she could look at it after a long day and still smile happily. But after Bahrain, when Melinda arrived at her apartment and saw it, she took it and threw it in her bottom drawer, unable to think about the way she and Phil used to be without breaking down. Months after the traumatic mission, Melinda re-opened her bottom drawer, looking for a lost piece of clothing, when she saw the picture frame there, face down. Melinda froze and stared at it, noticing something she hadn’t seen before. It was a simple message written in small letters on the back of the frame:
Melinda felt the tears well up in her eyes as she picked up the dear frame, turning it back over. She gazed at the pictures and the tears started running down her face. Melinda fell into bed with the picture frame cradled to her chest, crying herself to sleep as she had so many times since Bahrain.
Melinda always kept the picture frame close to her after that night. When Phil began dating Audrey, she would hold it close, trying her best to be happy for her best friend. When she heard the news of Phil’s death, she had wept over it all over again, unable to stop the flow of tears or the deep ache in her gut. Melinda even brought it with her on the BUS, hiding it under her mattress so no one would see it. One day when Phil was passing by her bunk, he peeked inside to check if she was there. He was about to leave when he noticed something dark against her stark white bed. Phil frowned, walked in, and pulled the frame out from under the bed, gasping when he realized what it was. He had no idea she still had it. He assumed she threw it away after Bahrain. Phil grinned and ran his finger over the glass, resting it over Melinda’s smile. How he wished he could see her smile like that again.
"What are you doing?" Melinda’s voice said from behind him.
Phil jumped and spun around to face her. “I was just-uh, looking for you and I saw something under your bed and I-“
Melinda snatched it from his hands, slightly embarrassed.
"I didn’t know you still had it." Phil said quietly, gazing at her much like he had been in the last picture from the gala. Melinda felt her heart skip a beat as she clutched the frame to her chest, drowning in his blue eyes.
"I could never get rid of it. After Bahrain, or even when you died. Every time I thought about it throwing it away, I would look at it again and I-I just couldn’t do it." Melinda started to turn away, not trusting herself to say anything else, when she felt her hand on her arm.
"Melinda…" Phil said softly as he pulled her close to him. Phil leaned down and kissed her gently, tenderly, and passionately on the lips.
When he pulled away, Phil got his wish. Melinda’s brilliant smile warmed his whole body from his head to his toes, but especially his heart. His Melinda was back.
He was forever hers, and she was forever his.
What the HECK just happened??? I don’t even know what this is or where it came from. It just kinda wrote itself. Maybe I should have just stuck with my first answer.
There. Much shorter that way. Hahaha! Sorry for this ridiculously long post!
